Blog #5--Is Second Life a whole new world?

Is Second Life a whole new world? The answer is yes.  Doe it have a place in my classroom? The answer is yes. Will I use it anytime soon? The answer is no. 

I feel like I went through many emotional stages while exploring VR and the 3D web's place in my classroom.  At first I found it laughable and denied its usage in a classroom...I mean come on... students are in "another world" enough, why purposefully send them to an alternative existence? Then I kept reading. I saw info on self-paced tutorials and thought...this could be amazing for differentiated instruction.  I started imagining the guided tours of places we study in class and got really excited about using this.....
Then reality struck and I realized that I would need to actually create an avatar....and the virtual world for my students to explore.  Yikes....just finding an avatar that doesn't play on an Angelina Jolie fantasy is hard enough, now I gotta set up a tour of Tienanmen Square?  No thanks, I don;t think I have the time. 

To be honest I would like to see where this goes.  I'd love to chat with a Social Studies teacher  and student who used Second Life and learn from their experiences before I jump into it.

My biggest concern is the marginalized student who I fear could get seriously lost in another world.  I have never been apart of this kind of thing, but I've seen an episode of Law and Order SVU (ripped form the headlines of course) where people became obsessed with this virtual world and met other crazies online... someone got killed.  Now I jest, yet I think it could be dangerous... But I guess having a facebook account isn't all that much different.

Wild West Webquest

Saddle up Cowboys and Cowgirls, we're taking a trip back in time to the WILD WILD WEST.  In case you couldn't tell I plan to do a webquest for my final project.  The unit I will be starting soon for US History is "Westward Expansion".  This is one unit that I feel could use a good technology boost.  My students will obviously be using their laptops to complete their task... discovering if the stereotypes of the Old West are true or false.  I will need to find some quality resources for them both online and maybe on film (for the stereotypes...maybe youtube).

I look forward to incorporating what I learned from EDT 619's webquest week into our class as well as creating an online "discussion/question & answer" space of my moodle page for kids as they work on thier project over the next couple of days.  While this is not new for my students or myself, I do get excited when my students take responsibility for their own learning and have the opportunity to work at their own pace, interpret data individually and process data collectively without constant teacher-hands-on-guidance.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Civil War Webquest

              1. Introduction. 
      1. Strength: gives an exciting scenario of time travel as well as background on the Civil War being the 1st “media war”
      2. Weakness: The role given to students is that of journalists, but beyond that there are few details…they have no specific task, not does it they say whether they are from the north or south.

    1. A task that is doable and interesting. 
      1. Strength: There are diverse roles that will allow kids working in groups of four to choose something that they are good at.
      2. Weakness: The intro to the tasks only highlights one job.  It makes that one sound much more important than the others…as a teacher I know this can lead to slack off in other positions.

    1. A process (do learners know what to do and when?). 
      1. Strength: Instructions and requirements broken down into 3 processes with different addable due date blanks.
      2. Weakness: Instructions may be too detailed and lengthy, it was easy to get bogged down by the paragraph of intro for each process before even getting to the bulleted to do list.

    1. Evaluation. 
      1. Strength: The rubric covers all essential aspects of the newspaper, so each members contribution is evaluated. 
      2. Weakness: This is a LOT of work for only 30 points, and the group is given one grade. 

    1. A conclusion that brings closure to the quest, reminds the learners about what they've learned...Overall thoughts.
      1. Strength: The conclusion offers a trip to a Civil War Museum which would be a great reward for the hard work
      2. Weakness: Not all classes have a Civil War Museum nearby, and the final reflection is a 250-300 word essay on their experience during the webquest.  I would prefer a more historically focused conclusion on what they learned. 

And, lastly:
    1. Is this a webquest you think you could use without modification in your classroom (not for the project in this class -- that should be your own creation)? What might you have to change?
      1. I would need to modify this web quest some. 
      2. Strength: There are great pictures that hopefully would interest students
      3. Weakness: The links provided are all from websites that support a very “Southern Perspective” on the civil war.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Webquests

To truly evaluate webquests I think I need to look at them from the perspective of both a student and a teacher, however, the strengths and weaknesses for each perspective do tend to overlap. 

As a student I think the greatest strength of a webquest is that if created well it is more interesting and motivating than other class activities.  Because of webquests multifaceted nature they also gives students with different learning styles a chance to showcase their particular talents.  As a student webquests also make research easier because their is less to "wade" though when you have previewed and pre-linked websites available.  Strengths from a teacher's perspective is the amount of engagement on behalf of many students. I guess most people would call it active learning.  I think this is invaluable. 

I perceive the weakness to be the same for students and teachers.  Being side-tracked by something like advertisements or videos on the website seems to be inevitable for some students.  As a teacher who has given webquests to students working in groups of 2-3, I have found that students can incorrectly divvy up the workload or waste lots of time hanging out.  The final weakness from a teaching perspective is the amount of time it takes to create a meaningful webquest and grade the final product.  I made one for my US History class concerning the Causes of the Civil War. I was hoping to impress my visiting principal, which I did, but at the cost of a lot time grading the new project.

Nothin but NETS

Design A Website that meets Accessibility requirements. (1,5)

I currently have a Moodle site that I created and maintain for daily interaction with students.  I often start my World Cultures class with a question about how World News.  I then have students login to moodle where I have a Current Events Forum where I have linked BBC and CNN articles concerning the topics/locations we are studying that day in class.  (India, Outsourcing)   I post questions concerning the article and have students answer them in the forum.

What I GOT and what there's NOT.

Hmmm technology.  I live in the land of milk and honey at HCHS.  We have the 1-1 laptop program. High Speed wireless internet is available in all areas of the school as well as in the parking lots:)   I have a brand spanking New Mac book.  I have two projectors in my room and a wireless hand held remote that allows me to switch from DVD to my laptop projection, to a student laptop projection to Video, to TV and back again with a touch of a button.  I got to play with and ipad yesterday and supposedly next year these will replace out wireless remotes and act as portable smart-boards.   I have a wireless microphone works through speakers placed strategically around the room so all students hear me equally. I have access to a smart-board room with active-panels as well.  I have everything I need in terms of technology at school, I couldn't ask for anything more...accept maybe a complimentary iphone:)  All teachers at my school are expected to integrate technology into their curriculum and for that matter, into most lessons. 
At HCHS, students and teachers alike love technology when it makes life easier and hate it when it doesn't.  The feedback from former students who experienced the 1-1 program and went to college is overwhelmingly positive.  It is why teachers who don't like technology use it...because it prepares students for the "real world".   Students love their laptops for games and social networking and complain about using it for education...just like they'd complain if they were taking notes on paper.  Obviously we battle a high sense of entitlement at HCHS, but for he most part students are grateful for the laptop experience.

As far as home goes...I can take my laptop home but I do not have wireless internet or any internet for that matter (I can thank Dave Ramsey and my cheap husband for that).  However my New Macbook doe keep company with my ancient beauty...a stainless Powerbook G4 from 2003, which is primarily used to play Jillian Micheals workout DVDS. If I need internet access I sit like a creeper in my car in the South Haven Walgreens parking lot.  I pray no one breaks into the store, beacsue if they watch security footage they are gonna wonder why the girl in the white saab wagon is there at 10:45pm looking at a computer screen.   (the local library closes at 8:00pm)


I was really excited about this class because I love the dialogue about technology in education.  I wanna talk about positive and negative and look at data and pedagogy.  I like learning about technology information literacy because my goal is use my tech experience to help other educators incorporate technology into their lessons.  Whether as a consultant or prof at a local CC, its what I am passionate about and I have a LOT to learn, especially the terms and background knowledge.

To Wiki or Not To Wiki

To Wiki or Not To Wiki....Ah yes that is the question of the day~

Teaching seniors in a research-laden class called "World Cultures" I have constantly struggled with this question.  For the last 5 years, I have maintained that Wikipedia is a wonderful thing, a great starting point, a valuable resource, BUT NOT a "source" my students can site on their research bibliography.  Am I antiquated or absolutely fabulous?  Let me know what you think:)
